Publisher’s Summary

Molly Gray is not like everyone else. She struggles with social skills and misreads the intentions of others. Her gran used to interpret the world for her, codifying it into simple rules that Molly could live by.

Since Gran died a few months ago, twenty-five-year-old Molly has been navigating life’s complexities all by herself. No matter—she throws herself with gusto into her work as a hotel maid. Her unique character, along with her obsessive love of cleaning and proper etiquette, make her an ideal fit for the job. She delights in donning her crisp uniform each morning, stocking her cart with miniature soaps and bottles, and returning guest rooms at the Regency Grand Hotel to a state of perfection.

But Molly’s orderly life is upended the day she enters the suite of the infamous and wealthy Charles Black, only to find it in a state of disarray and Mr. Black himself dead in his bed. Before she knows what’s happening, Molly’s unusual demeanor has the police targeting her as their lead suspect. She quickly finds herself caught in a web of deception, one she has no idea how to untangle. Fortunately for Molly, friends she never knew she had unite with her in a search for clues to what really happened to Mr. Black—but will they be able to find the real killer before it’s too late?

Clue-like, locked-room mystery and a heartwarming journey of the spirit, The Maid explores what it means to be the same as everyone else and yet entirely different—and reveals that all mysteries can be solved through connection to the human heart.

My Review

Rating: 2 out of 5.

As someone who had heard a great deal of buzz surrounding “The Maid” by Nita Prose, I was eager to delve into its pages and explore the world it promised to uncover. However, what I found within the book’s narrative left me feeling largely disappointed and frustrated, leading to a less than satisfying reading experience.

The main character’s struggle with understanding social cues brought out a mix of emotions in me. Sometimes, I found myself thinking, “How can she not see what’s going on?” I had to stop myself from getting too angry.

The mystery of the story was interesting and kept me engaged. However, my frustration with the main character made it hard to fully enjoy the plot. It felt like her struggles were overshadowing the mystery that I wanted to unravel.

Taking a step back, I realized that maybe I wasn’t patient enough with the main character’s flaws. But, I’ve come to understand that I’m just not a fan of “unreliable” main characters. It was tough for me to connect with her feelings, and I had to rely on other characters’ stories to piece together the whole picture.

Looking back, I see that “The Maid” is a balance between my personal preferences and the author’s intent. Even though I struggled with the main character, I still appreciate the diverse range of characters in literature. While the mystery was intriguing, my emotional reactions made it a bit hard to fully dive into the story.

In the end, “The Maid” taught me that different readers can take different paths through the same story. It’s a reminder that our feelings and perspectives play a big role in how we experience a book.

That’s the trouble with pain. It’s a contagious as a disease. It spreads from the person who first endured it to those who love them most. Truth isn’t always the highest ideal’ sometimes it must be sacrificed to stop the spread of pain to those you love.
