Publisher’s Summary

It was a case that gripped the nation. In December 2003, Luke Ryder, the stepfather of acclaimed filmmaker Guy Howard (then aged 10), was found dead in the garden of their suburban family home.

Luke Ryder’s murder has never been solved. Guy Howard’s mother and two half-sisters were in the house at the time of the murder—but all swear they saw nothing. Despite a high-profile police investigation and endless media attention, no suspect was ever charged.

But some murder cases are simply too big to forget…

Now comes the sensational new streaming series Infamous, dedicated to investigating—and perhaps cracking—this famous cold case. Years later a group of experts re-examine the evidence – with shocking results. Does the team know more than they’ve been letting on?

True crime lovers and savvy readers, you can review the evidence and testimony at the same time as the experts. But can you solve the case before they do?

My Review

Rating: 3 out of 5.

I heard about “A Murder In The Family” on TikTok and I was so excited for it to be voted as the November book in Thrillers by The BookClub Jax. Then I was even more excited when Cara Hunter, the author, followed our book club and personal book pages on Instagram and messaged us to “let her know if we had any questions.” I cross my fingers this blog does not land in her emails because I did not enjoy it as much as TikTok raved about. I would’ve probably not finished it, but being the host of the book club, I felt weird not finishing it.

It was so hard to follow, I found myself going back to the beginning where the characters were introduced because I couldn’t keep up who was who. Then all the investigation led us into stories that at the end of the day felt a bit far fetched.

Even though the premise of “A Murder In The Family” seemed intriguing at first, the complexities of the plot and the multitude of characters became overwhelming for me. The constant need to backtrack to keep track of the characters disrupted the flow of the narrative, making it challenging to fully immerse myself in the story. Additionally, the various storylines that emerged during the investigation felt somewhat contrived and far-fetched, ultimately diminishing the impact of the novel for me.

While my experience with this book may not have met my initial expectations, I appreciate the author’s engagement with our book club and personal book pages. Cara Hunter’s willingness to connect with readers and address any questions or concerns demonstrates a genuine commitment to her audience, and I respect her for that. It’s always valuable to have the opportunity to engage directly with an author, regardless of the personal reception of their work.

Book Quotes

You have got to be kidding me. Thirty-four? All the shit she went through about the age difference and all the time they’re basically the same fucking age?
