- Alyssa and Marshall
Before It Ends with Us, it started with Atlas. Colleen Hoover tells fan favorite Atlas’s side of the story and shares what comes next in this long-anticipated sequel to the “glorious and touching” (USA TODAY) #1 New York Times bestseller It Ends with Us.
Lily and her ex-husband, Ryle, have just settled into a civil co-parenting rhythm when she suddenly bumps into her first love, Atlas, again. After nearly two years separated, she is elated that for once, time is on their side, and she immediately says yes when Atlas asks her on a date.
But her excitement is quickly hampered by the knowledge that, though they are no longer married, Ryle is still very much a part of her life—and Atlas Corrigan is the one man he will hate being in his ex-wife and daughter’s life.
Switching between the perspectives of Lily and Atlas, It Starts with Us picks up right where the epilogue for the “gripping, pulse-pounding” (Sarah Pekkanen, author of Perfect Neighbors) bestselling phenomenon It Ends with Us left off. Revealing more about Atlas’s past and following Lily as she embraces a second chance at true love while navigating a jealous ex-husband, it proves that “no one delivers an emotional read like Colleen Hoover” (Anna Todd, New York Times bestselling author).
I read “It Ends With Us” before It Ends With Us became a Tik Tok sensation. BookTok took this book through the roof and I am so glad it did because Colleen would have never written It Starts With Us.
This book brought me closure. You can not read this book as a stand-alone. You just can’t. You need to see the back story that brought this book to life.
What I loved about this book
- I loved Atlas’s therapist and his quotes. Example: “We finally reached the beach, my little whale.”
- Seeing Lilly succeed in her professional life and… personal
- I loved Lilly’s mom and her story. Had to fight back tears while reading it.
- I loved Allysa and Marshall standing up for what is right rather than standing up for friendship.
What I disliked about this book
- I re-read It Ends With Us a couple weeks prior to the It Starts With Us release so I did not need a reminder of Lilly’s diaries, especially in her journal entries to Ellen.
- I kept waiting for shit to hit the fan.
I loved this book and it had me smiling like an idiot at the end. please read It Ends With Us first no exception!

Maybe the idea of love ending being a negative thing is simply a matter of perspective. Because to me, the idea that a love came to an end means that, at some point, there was love that existed. And there was a time in my life, before you, when I was completely untouched by it.Colleen Hoover, It Starts with Us
He’s a broken man, but he isn’t broken because of me. He was broken before he met me. Sometimes people think if they love a broken person enough, they can be what finally repairs them, but the problem with that is the other person just ends up broken, too.Colleen Hoover, It Starts with Us
My choice helped me realize that sometimes the hardest decisions a person can make will most likely lead to the best outcomesColleen Hoover, It Starts with Us
