Love & Other Words by Christina Lauren

Main Characters

  • Macy Sorensen
  • Elliot Petropoulos

Publisher’s Summary

Macy Sorensen is settling into an ambitious if emotionally tepid routine: work hard as a new pediatrics resident, plan her wedding to an older, financially secure man, keep her head down and heart tucked away.

But when she runs into Elliot Petropoulos – the first and only love of her life – the careful bubble she’s constructed begins to dissolve. Once upon a time, Elliot was Macy’s entire world – growing from her gangly teen friend into the man who coaxed her heart open again after the loss of her mother…only to break it on the very night he declared his love for her.

Told in alternating timelines between then and now, teenage Elliot and Macy grow from friends to much more – spending weekends and lazy summers together in a house outside of San Francisco reading books, sharing favorite words, and talking through their growing pains and triumphs. As adults, they have become strangers to one another until their chance reunion. Although their memories are obscured by the agony of what happened that night so many years ago, Elliot will come to understand the truth behind Macy’s decade-long silence and will have to overcome the past and himself to revive her faith in the possibility of an all-consuming love.

My Review

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Love & Other Words is a refreshing and captivating romance book that takes you on a rollercoaster of emotions. It’s the kind of romance story that I absolutely adore. Want to know why? Because it lets you truly get to know the characters as complete human beings, not just fragments. That’s why, when the story jumps to the present, you can understand their struggles, doubts, and pain.

One of the things that makes Love & Other Words stand out is how well-developed the characters are. The authors have done a fantastic job of painting a full picture of their lives, thoughts, and feelings. It’s not like in other romance books where you only get bits and pieces; here, you get the whole package. This makes it easier to connect with the characters on a deeper level and truly understand what they’re going through.

Love & Other Words is the kind of book that I would eagerly read again, as if I had never experienced before.

PS if you’re a fan of Colleen Hoover writing I think you will really enjoy Love & Other Words.

Book Quotes

I’ve been waiting for you to come home for eleven years. I’ll go anywhere you go.

― Christina Lauren, Love and Other Words

You’re the love of my life. I assumed I would get over you eventually, but seeing you yesterday?” He shakes his head. “I couldn’t go home to someone else and pretend to love her with everything I have.

― Christina Lauren, Love and Other Words

I’ll take anything you give me. Is that pathetic?

― Christina Lauren, Love and Other Words

I think of her everywhere. She is everywhere, in every moment, and also she’s in no one moment. She misses every single one of my moments and I’m not sure who that is harder for: me surviving here without her, or her without me, existing wherever she is.

― Christina Lauren, Love and Other Words

I give myself three more seconds to look at him, and it’s like another punch to the gut. He’s my person. He’s always been my person. My best friend, my confidant, probably the love of my life. And I’ve spent the last eleven years being angry and self-righteous. But at the end of the day, he tore a hole in us, and fate ripped it wide open.
